So get there early or avoid Sundays.įrom the parking lots you can either walk to the top, which is not far, or take the chairlift and then walk around the flat top. During the vacation and on nice Sundays, the parking lots (fee) fill up pretty fast and you can drive along the dead-end road which terminates by the hotels, but this can mean you walk the last part. You can drive almost all the way to the top, to a small plateau where you find a nice variety of shops, restaurants and hotels. With its fairly bare top, you get fantastic view from up there across the Back Forest, the Vosges in the Alsace and as far as the snow-capped peaks of the Swiss Alps on clear days, mostly in late September or October. The Feldberg in the Black Forest is a great place to visit if you are staying in the Freiburg (Breisgau Germany) or Basel (Switzerland) area. I am the skier in the family and wouldn’t mind returning to Feldberg, but the rest of my family are snowboarders and they don’t want to return. Needless to say I enjoyed being on the slopes but was disappointed with the layout of the ski resort and lack of chairlift for the main beginner slopes. There was always a traffic jam to get down from the bridge and complete havoc and accident friendly. On the other side of the resort there is a wonderful 6 person lift and a fantastic beginner slope but the only way to get back across to the main part of the resort is a ridiculous bridge which is extremely narrow and steep…not good for beginners. The rope lifts were brutal for all and extremely tiring for skiers and not snowboard friendly. Slopes 8 and 9 were too steep for beginners. The two main slopes rated beginner (slopes 8 and 9) are primarily fed with an extremely long “T” bar rope lift and a smaller rope lift INSTEAD of a 2 or 3 person chairlift. Family friendly yes everyone on staff was nice but I disagree with it being considered beginner friendly. We are a family of experienced skiers/snowboarders and brought another family of beginners with us to Feldberg Ski resort based on reviews of it being family friendly and beginner friendly. ![]() That said, compared to well known alpine resorts, it’s very small, the lifts are slow and as it isn’t very high, so if the snow hasn’t been great, you’ll be on a limited number of runs with artificial snow. Apart from that, it’s a friendly place and prices are reasonable. Sadly, many of the nicest runs were closed this year. When we were able to ski, it was good with fresh snow on top and there are plenty of wide, easy slopes for improving and beginner skiers to practise on. This was even worse while two of the three large chair lifts were out of use. Bear in mind much of the resort is served by T bar lifts which are slow and can be tricky to use. This was not as much of a problem last year when it was all open. So, we were limited as to where we could go and spent more time queueing than skiing. The lift queues for what was operating were really bad and they are not great at the best of times. As a result of this, wind and poor snow in the run-up, about half the slopes and lifts were closed. ![]() This time, the weather wasn’t good, raining hard the first day with poor visibility for much of the rest of our stay. This was the second successive year I skied at Feldberg having been for the first time in 2019.
